U.S urges Pakistan to end restrictions on social media platforms

WASHINGTON – The U.S. State Department reiterated its call for the Pakistani government to end internet shutdowns across the country, including limitations on social media platforms.

During a press briefing, spokesperson Matthew Miller denounced government-imposed restrictions on internet access.

The statement follows Washington’s congratulatory message to Maryam Nawaz on her appointment as Punjab’s first woman chief minister.

The U.S. also reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering its partnership with Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“We consistently stress the importance of upholding these basic freedoms in our discussions with Pakistani authorities,” said Miller, pointing out Washington’s dedication to freedom of expression in Pakistan. He condemned any government actions that restrict internet platforms.

Responding to inquiries about reported irregularities in recent Pakistani elections, Miller urged the newly elected government to conduct a thorough investigation into alleged electoral misconduct.

He acknowledged the competitive nature of the elections, with millions participating, but highlighted concerns over irregularities and challenges raised by political parties.
